Diversity Visa and Green Card Lottery

Diversity Visa – Green Card Lottery

Diversity visas are a way to even out the representation of the various nationalities residing in the United States. If you win a diversity visa green card lottery, you can come to the United States. If you have a family, you will likely want them to join you. At the Burchinow Immigration Law Firm in Denver, Colorado, we can help make that happen.

The phrase “Only in America” applies to the diversity visa. Securing residency through a lottery system may be based on the luck of the draw, but it helps underrepresented nationalities gain citizenship and bring family members to the country. Only 55,000 visas are issued annually to qualified applicants.

Diversity Visa Application and Qualifications

While the green card lottery is as much about luck as it is anything else, diversity visa applicants must be qualified as follows:

  1. Applicants must be from a country that has fewer than 55,000 immigrants to the US over the past five years, and
  2. Have at least a high school degree or equivalent, or have worked for at least 2 years in an occupation that requires 2 years of training or experience.

Applicants may apply for the lottery once a year for a one month period. It is generally held at the beginning of the federal fiscal year (October) but it has been extended through November, look for registration notices online at: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1318.html

If you’re uncertain about your ability to qualify – or if you need help with the application – we are here to help.

At the Burchinow Immigration Law Firm, we work with lucky clients who have secured a diversity visa through the lottery. Their luck means that their spouses and children may join them within a specified time period. Reuniting families is important to our firm and one of the more rewarding parts of our practice.

A Note About the Unauthorized Practice of Law

Unfortunately, some of the people who offer to help with immigration applications are not trustworthy. For this reason, it’s essential that you contact a professional attorney. With many years of legal experience, Burchinow Immigration Law is a trusted resource licensed to practice law in the State of Colorado and a member of the American Association of Immigration Attorneys (AILA).
